Paap Associates

Jay Paap is President of Paap Associates, a management consulting firm assisting major corporations in their business and technology development efforts, serves on the faculty of the Industrial Relations Center at Cal Tech and the Executive Program at The Sloan School (MIT), is a Fellow of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP), and a PDMA Certified New Product Development Professional. For over 30 years he has managed projects world-wide dealing with business and product development, strategic alliances, technology management and competitive intelligence. He is a frequent speaker on innovation, alliances, corporate venturing, and competitive intelligence, appearing in executive seminars throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.

Jay received his Ph.D. from MIT’s Sloan School of Management with concentrations in technology management and organizational design. He was a faculty member at both Sloan and Indiana University, and has served on the editorial advisory boards of Technology Management and the Competitive Intelligence Review, where he guest edited the 1994 issue on Competitive Technical Intelligence.

Paul Germeraad

Paul Germeraad is President of Intellectual Assets, Inc., a professional advisory services firm specializing in integrated business, R&D, and IP processes. Intellectual Assets, Inc. is distinguished by using cutting edge IP assessment tools and proprietary software, in addition to offering invaluable insight based on the depth and breadth of executive level management experience and industry coverage the firm’s members represent.

Dr. Germeraad was previously Chief Operating Officer for Aurigin Systems, Inc., a software start-up company focused on the development of intellectual asset management products for the Competitive Intelligence, Licensing and R&D communities. Prior to joining Aurigin in 1998, Paul worked for three Fortune 500 companies. He served as Vice President, Corporate Research for Avery Dennison. Before joining Avery Dennison, Paul was director of James River Corporation's Flexible Packaging Technical Center and held a variety of R&D and management positions at Raychem Corporation.

Paul is past Chairman of the Industrial Research Institute, an organization of Chief Technology Officers whose organizations account for over 70% of all US R&D spending. Paul is past Trustee and VP Education for the Licensing Executives Society (LES USA-Canada), is an instructor for the LES Professional Development Series and served as Chair of the LESI Education Committee.

Paul is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, with a B.A. in Chemistry. In addition, Paul holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Irvine and an LL.B degree from La Salle University.

Astrid Spain

McDermott Will & Emery LLP

Astrid R. Spain is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the San Diego office. Astrid is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and the Life Sciences & Biotechnology Practice Group where her practice spans patent counseling, prosecution and litigation in the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries.

Astrid's clients represent many sectors of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, including both start-up ventures and well-established branded companies. Astrid frequently assists clients with the development and implementation of streamlined and business oriented intellectual property strategies. Astrid has significant experience in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. patent applications as well as the management of corresponding foreign proceedings. Astrid's practice also includes preparation numerous validity, infringement, and freedom to operate opinions regarding biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents. A substantial portion of Astrid's practice is devoted to patent litigation and her litigation experience includes participation in a lengthy jury trial.

Astrid is an editor and regular contributor to McDermott’s IP Update. She also frequently comments and publishes on topics related to intellectual property law. Prior to attending law school, Astrid earned a graduate degree in the Department of Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology at UCLA.

Astrid is a member of California State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of California.

Amy Achter
Director of Corporate
Intellectual Asset Management

Kimberly-Clark Corporation

Amy Achter is Director, Corporate Intellectual Asset Management at Kimberly-Clark. In her role she has accountability for Open Innovation, Out-Licensing and Intellectual Asset Management. The teams within her organization partner with the business teams and the legal department to create and enable go-to-market strategies - including opportunities for internal development, Open Innovation and out-licensing. Her group has been instrumental in deploying IA management practices, processes and tools, and provides IA best practices across the organization. Additionally, her teams are currently managing a portfolio of strategic relationships across Kimberly-Clark.

Amy joined K-C in April of 1990 after completing her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. She also has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Amy has worked in K-C’s Neenah and Roswell locations during the course of her career at K-C, in both sector and core capability/technology areas.
